Rescue Dawn

Director - Werner Herzog

Genre - Action/Adventure/Biography/War

This is Werner Herzog attempting a somewhat 'Hollywood' film. It has swelling music, a big star none other than Mr. Batman himself and some action scenes. Based on a true story, Christian Bale plays a U.S. soldier captured by the enemy when his plane is shot down in Laos. His spirit of never giving up no matter the circumstances is exemplary and we see him getting in all kinds of squalid and horrible conditions. Looking malnourished and haggard as he did in 'The Machinist', Bale goes through the physical and emotional aspects of a prisoner with flying colors. Too bad the film suffered from a case of uncertain identity. It is too slow and tedious to be an action picture and too 'Hollywood dictated' to be one of Herzog's signature films.

2.5 STARS!
