Slacker

Director
- Richard Linklater

Genre - Comedy/Drama

The fact that Richard Linklater actually chose to make his debut as a director with this should inform us of his integrity as an artist. Abandoning linear storyline, plot or any semblance of commercialism, this movie is his 'f*ck you' to the industry. And unlike Steven Soderbergh who was once also an indie director, you know Linklater would never sell out to do Ocean's 11, 12 and 13. All that said and done, this still only showed a very tiny spark of his potential.

3 STARS!

I don't get the hate for Soderbergh, but I'm a fan of Linklater and Slacker. It starts out feeling tedious, but gets in a groove and you don't want it to end as it makes for just a fun, laid-back time. It's also the ultimate mystery - who will we be following next?
We do not hate Soderbergh. In fact, we like Sex, Lies & Videotape and Full Frontal. What we feel though is that he has lost his way and we miss him. If and when he gets back to making films that are more daring and ground-breaking like we know he can, we'd be pleased to bits.

Slacker was an admirable film, with occasionally amusing dialogue (smurfs are like krishna), but I have to admit I couldn't wait for it to end. He's gone on to better things. Though, if you want to open a debate on the commercialism and creativity of Linklater and Soderbergh - which was the better remake? Solaris or Bad News Bears?
Both Soderbergh & Linklater have done questionable and commercialized films. We're not oblivious of that. Our concern for Soderbergh as a director is more towards the path he has taken. He seemed to have lost the essence of what made him great in the beginning. 'The Good German', 'Erin Brockovich' and the Ocean's trilogy seemed more like the sort of movies Spielberg would do. In contrast, although Linklater did do 'Bad News Bears', his amazing repertoire of personal and quality films far outweigh Soderbergh's. Anyway, we appreciate your insightful comment very much. Thank you.

I was enthralled the first time I saw Slacker, I'd never seen anything like it. I love this movie. I have a ton of respect for Linklater, his movies (maybe with the exception of Tape), his outlook, his ethics & his vision. He describes himself as a "slacker" but he works too hard to have that tag. He's a slacker in spirit I think. I for one am glad he's not a slacker though, because if he was, he'd have never made any movies!
