Stranger Than Paradise

Director - Jim Jarmusch

Genre - Comedy/Drama

Independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch's official debut. This little movie shot in black and white with a shoe-string budget is quite charming but offers very little bite in the story department. The Hungarian cousin of a slacker-type dude comes to live in America. Forced by his aunt to take the girl into his scruffy abode, the dude is at first reluctant and pissy but slowly finds the girl warming her way into his heart. Expect sparse, uninspired dialogue and a leisurely, almost anesthetic pace.

2.5 STARS!

Well, I liked this one more than you guys. In fact, it's one of my favorites (and I'm generally not a Jarmusch guy). What it lacks in story it makes up for in atmosphere.

I strongly disagree with your rating of this wonderful movie. This is one of my favourites. The deadpan humour and the existentialism casually propounded are amazing. This is the classical beat movie. Hence, plot has been dispensed with. Instead what we have are the amazing road journey, the memorable buddy factor (thanks to the great screen chemistry between the trio), and a terrific character study in all its subtleties and nuances. A truly great film as it manages to be a worthy companion piece to the famous beat novel On The Road by Kerouac.

Actually I liked this movie a lot myself. I thought the characters were very entertaining.
We believe Jarmusch was still finding his way in filmmaking with this movie. To us, it was like a student film and nothing more. Beat movement or not, a good film to us has to contain an intriguing plot no matter what. It has to move us, entertain and make us ponder. 'Stranger Than Paradise' merely made us wish we were watching 'Ghost Dog' instead.

That said, we're the first to admit that our tastes gravitate towards more basic elements like plot and strong artistic value. We're not saying that all of you are wrong in any way. It's down to personal tastes at this point and we appreciate all your inputs. :)

Yikes! I think it began life as Jarmusch's college thesis!
