Director - Yôjirô Takita
Genre - Drama
In all honesty, this is a hard film to like. Death and all its romantic connotations did not manifest itself in this film. Instead, we are treated (or subjected to, depending on your poison) to a lesson on life and what it means to be alive, as opposed to being dead as a door nail. Most Japanese, you will realize as the movie goes on, have a great respect for the departed. To them, a beautiful ritual honoring their dearly missed brings them peace and closure. The leading man in the story discovered this truth in its due course and we must admit, we did as well. Though, as we pointed out. With all the coffins and carcasses appearing with unrestrained abandon, this is no walk in the park.
